PLAIN DEALER ENDORSES DICK AMBROSE FOR CUYAHOGA COMMON PLEAS COURT
Published: Saturday, Sept.18, 2010, 4:29 AM Updated: Weds, Oct. 06, 2010, 4:49 PM
Common Pleas judges preside over felony cases and civil actions from Cuyahoga County. At stake in this race is a six-year term beginning Jan. 7, 2011. Early voting begins Sept. 28.
THE CANDIDATES:
Dick Ambrose, 57, Common Pleas judge since 2005.
Mary Elaine Hall, 57, attorney in private practice.
OUR VIEW:
The case of mass-murder defendant Anthony Sowell bounced through the dockets of two other judges -- both removed (one voluntarily) for possible conflicts -- before landing in a less volatile environment: the courtroom of Judge Ambrose. His undeniable gravity and unassuming competence should be ideal for such a highly charged case.
With the trial set for February, Ambrose first needs to be re-elected. But if the voters are paying attention, that shouldn't be a problem. He got the highest possible ratings from each of four local bar associations, while Hall got the lowest. Those grades reflect the hard work that Ambrose -- a Republican who was twice appointed to the bench by former Gov. Bob Taft and successfully held his seat the second time -- has put in to learn his craft.
Hall clearly cares deeply about the rights of indigent defendants. But Ambrose's evenhanded approach more than merits six more years on the bench.
